Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy est. 1955

Yesterday, I had the honor and privilege of being awarded Shodan (First Degree Blackbelt) in free form combat from Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy. The belt presentation was in front of Sifu Greg Allen and six yudansha.

Eight years ago, my son & I started at Hayashi’s. Cris has a purple belt in Judo. There have been a great many positives in my life because of Hayashi’s – I met Lisa at the dojo.

Thank you Sensei Taichi Hayashi for giving me the opportunity and the knowledge to get this far.

I was fortunate to be able to train for this with three martial artists whose skills are superior – Roberto Gutierrez, Josh Gray & Peter Scruggs. Not only are they excellent martial artists and teachers, but excellent human beings, with great families. All three received Shodan as well.

Congratulations to Jorge Talavera on receiving Sandan and to Mando & Chupa for their black belts.

It has been a privilege to have been trained by a number of talented people: Mari, Eric, Moe, Esther, Brenda, Serenity, Patrick, Sergio, Louis among others. I wish Jorge Diaz-Dulanto were here.

A very special thank you to Sensei Diane Crowell-Hayashi who started me on this journey.

When I graduated college we were told “your education is just beginning”. Yesterday we were told “You just finished kindergarden, the learning starts now…”.

Saturday November 5, 2011

On Saturday November 5, 2011 Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy will host a 10 year memorial ceremony and martial arts seminar in honor of Professor Tarow Ty Hayashi.

Mr. Hayashi founded the dojo in 1955.  After his service in the military and journeys around the country, he decided to settle in the city of El Paso, Texas.  Attracted by the diversity and rich heritage, of which he felt a very welcoming place to live.

He became known as one of El Paso’s finest martial artists, inducted into the El Paso Boxing and Martial Arts Hall of fame.  He taught thousands of students through his martial arts academy, as well as internationally, instructed at the University of New Mexico and El Paso Community College, trained recruits for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department, and soldiers at Fort Bliss.

Mr. Hayashi dedicated his life to living honorable, pure of heart and mind, and teaching martial arts for all those who had the willingness and burning desire to learn and enrich their lives in the martial arts.

Over the years of his teachings, he inspired thousands of people to study and pursue the way of the warrior.

Come experience a great opportunity to learn from the most respected instructors in El Paso.

The Martial Arts Seminar will be instructed by Sensei Taichi Hayashi and Greg Allen, who will cover street self defense tactics, how to defend against an armed attacker.

Open to all people of all levels, beginner to advanced.

No previous martial arts experience is required in order to participate.  Call (915) 760- 6999 for more info.

Jigoro Kano

1860 – 1938

In 1882, Dr. Jigoro Kano became the Founder of Judo, meaning the Gentle Way.  Dr. Kano was known for his relentless passion for knowledge and training.  In Japan, he became the president and founder of the Japan Athletic Association in 1911.  One year later, Kano became Japan’s first member on the International Olympic Committee.  This would be the first time Japan would participate in the World Olympics.  In 1938, Dr. Jigoro Kano died at the age of 78 of pneumonia.  Today, there are millions of people practicing Judo all around the world.

Tarow Ty Hayashi

1927 – 2001

After his service in the U.S. military Professor Tarow Hayashi established the International Zen Bujutsukan Federation of North America in 1955.  For many years he tought thousands of students the fighting system he had developed in both the States and Mexico.  It incorporated the concepts and techniques from various Japanese martial arts such as Judo, Karate, Jujitsu, Kendo.  Today, Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy continues to thrive under the supervision of his son Taichi Hayashi, with the same dedication to martial arts and teaching that his father began over half a century ago.
